Lecture | Meg Bero: "In Two Worlds: Ledger Art in the 19th & 21st C."

Following the theme of transformation in the current exhibit, curator Meg Bero will share the transformation of narrative drawing by the Plains tribes in the 19th and 21st centuries. The term "ledger art" comes from the large bound ledger books brought west by military men and traders and used to record transactions and inventory. These were appropriated by men of the Plains tribes and used as sketchbooks in which they drew a visual history of themselves, their families, and their tribe. Ledger drawings give us a Native perspective on the tumultuous last quarter of the 19th century and a record of Plains life at that time. Contemporary artists are continuing the tradition in transformative fashion.

This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
