DOWNTOWN AURORA BUSINESSES TAKE ON HUNGER ACTION MONTH

September is Hunger Action Month, also known as HAM. The month-long campaign brings awareness to hunger in the community and offers ways for community members to contribute to both Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry and Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry.

Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry is hosting Carts for a Cause at several downtown businesses. Aurora Downtown partnered with Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry and VizoArts to invite local artists to decorate grocery carts and turn them into works of art to be displayed at various businesses throughout downtown during the month of September.

Aurora artist Teresa Millies Fiehn weaved eight pairs of jeans into a shopping cart for the Aurora Interfaith Food Pantry’s Carts for a Cause project.

Aurora artist and teacher Grahame Wilkin’s cart features Italian glass of all colors of the rainbow.

“These individual pieces of glass can represent families struggling to financially make ends meet or represent different garden fruits and vegetables growing. When the wind blows the cart will be like a giant wind chime,” Wilkin said.

Several businesses in downtown Aurora have also partnered with Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry on special promotions and donations:

Altiro Latin Fusion, 1 S. Stolp Ave. will donate 10% every Monday in Sept from 3-8 pm from orders of Al Pablano Tapa and a Ala Organica Cocktail or a Fresh squeezed Lemonade.

Gary Brown Art Studio & Gallery, 7 S. Broadway, will offer a raffle entry during First Fridays on Sept. 4 and Saturday, Sept. 5 for every $5 donation. Prizes will be artwork by Maureen Gasek, Gary Brown, and Karen Dolce.

Gillerson’s Grubbery, 33 W. New York St., will collect diapers and feminine products for the month of September.

La Quinta de los Reyes, 36 E. New York St., will donate 10% from Tuesday thru Thursday on any fajita plate during the month of September. Chicken Fajitas, Steak Fajitas, Veggie Fajitas, and Combo Fajitas all included.

McCarty Mills Taproom, 140 S. River St. Ste. 108, will donate 10% of sales of the reserved keg from Brother Chimp. Beer of the month is For the Masses IPA.
