Local Girl Scouts Offer Virtual Outdoor Experiences for Summer 2020

Jun 08, 2020 02:03PM ● By Cassidy Newberry

Northern Illinois – Every year girls look forward to Girl Scout summer camp where they participate in beloved traditions while making outdoor memories that last a lifetime. This year, after consulting health experts and following important safety protocols, Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois decided to close its in-person summer camp programs for the 2020 camping season, including Camp Dean in Big Rock, Camp McCormick in Stillman Valley, and Camp Far Horizons in Hanover. The health and safety of girls is always the first priority in Girl Scouts.

Although girls and families understood and appreciated the council’s decisive action, many wondered if there would still be the possibility of Girl Scout summer activities. Today, Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois is pleased to announce its slate of 2020 Summer Virtual Outdoor Experiences.

While there is no replacement for traditional Girl Scout summer camp, the organization will provide virtual outdoor summer experiences where girls will enjoy face-to-face friend-making online, camp activities, and new features that bring the summer camping experience into homes. Each week will also showcase activities related to Girl Scout badges and Journeys.

All virtual outdoor summer experiences are open to Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts! Cost is $50 per week for members; $75 for non-members. GEO Boxes (supplies to complete activities) are included in the cost and will be shipped to campers prior to the event.

Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois will offer the following virtual outdoor experiences this summer:

  • June 22–26: The Great Girl Scout Campout

  • June 29–July 3: Artists Outdoors

  • July 6–10: Observe Your World and Beyond

  • July 13–17: Mad Scientist

  • July 20–24: Lessons from Big Foot

  • July 27–31: Slay the Dragons:

Registration for each session closes two weeks prior to the start date. For more information or to register, visit
