Aurora - Marmion Academy senior, Michael Neff, son of Charles and Bridget Neff of Batavia, was named a 2019 National Merit Scholar and was awarded a $2500 scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.
National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the Finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
While at Marmion, Neff has been a member of the National Honor Society, the WYSE Team, and the Math Team, serving as a Math Team Captain his senior year. He is also the 2018-2109 JROTC C Company Executive Officer. Neff is the Class of 2019 Salutatorian and was awarded for four years of academic excellence in Math and Spanish.
Neff received a perfect score of 36 on the ACT in February 2018, during his junior year at Marmion.
Neff will continue his education at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he will major in Computer Science.
