Aurora, IL - Funeral arrangements have been set for Mayor Thomas J. Weisner, the 57th mayor of Aurora, who led the city with “passion, persistence and professionalism,” from 2005 to 2016. With great sadness, Mayor Irvin announced his passing to the public on December 28.
“After a courageous battle with cancer, Mayor Weisner departed this life today with his faithful wife of 46 years, Marilyn, and his family by his side. On behalf of the City of Aurora, I offer our sincerest condolences to Marilyn, their son Tony and the entire family,” he wrote.
Mayor Irvin tells of Mayor Weisner’s many accomplishments as a “selfless servant of the people.” From his early years serving the people of the Solomon Islands in the Peace Corps to the two decades he worked in City Hall in executive positions before becoming mayor, it is clear Weisner lived a life of outstanding public service.
“He was a true public servant who will forever live in the hearts and minds of the people,” wrote Mayor Irvin.
“I know I can speak on behalf of all Aurorans, as well as those who worked with him throughout the region, when I say Mayor Weisner will truly be missed.”
Those interested in paying respects may attend a public wake at New England Congregational Church, 406 W. Galena Blvd. The wake will be 2-7pm on Thursday, January 10 and Friday, January 11.
A public memorial service will be held at 11am on Monday, January 14 at the Paramount Theatre, 23 E. Galena Blvd. A private burial will take place at Marywood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to the Weisner Foundation or the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry. Contributions can be mailed to P.O. Box 2602, Aurora, IL 60507-2602.
The City of Aurora will also pay its respects on air with a live broadcast through 95.9 The River. They will host a special onsite radio broadcast – Remembering Mayor Weisner – on Friday, January 4 at Aurora City Hall, 44 E. Downer Place.
Hosts Scott Mackay and Danielle Tufano of The River’s Morning Show will honor Mayor Weisner from 6-10am in Aurora City Council Chambers.
The public is invited to visit the live broadcast and share memories on air about Mayor Weisner’s impact on the community.
