ESO May events part of 100th Anniversary world-wide celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s birth
The 2017-18 ESO season finale concerts led by Music Director Andrew Grams feature the ESO premiere of the great American composer Leonard Bernstein’s Candide Suite as part of a world-wide celebration of the composer’s 100th birthday. The Suite is an arrangement by Charlie Harmon derived from the 1956 Bernstein operetta. Also included on the program is Gustav Mahler’s emotional Symphony No. 5, written by the composer after a serious illness. Bernstein did much to promote the music of Mahler and was buried with a copy of Mahler’s fifth symphony in his casket.
The ESO and the Gail Borden Public Library will host a free Bernstein Birthday Bash on Tuesday, May 1, 6:00 pm at the Library that includes an introduction by Andrew Grams, birthday cake and a screening of West Side Story. Bernstein composed the music for this iconic film. Register for the free Birthday Bash at GailBorden.info. For tickets to the May 5 & 6 concerts, visit ElginSymphony.Org.
