Swan Lake is the first of Tchaikovsky’s three ballets. It was not well received when it premiered in 1877 but with its colorful orchestration and unforgettable melodies, it has since earned a permanent place as one of the most treasured ballets of all time. Sleeping Beauty, on the other hand, was an immediate success when it premiered in 1890. Based on Charles Perrault’s fairy tale of a sleeping princess awakened by her dashing prince, it was a favorite of Tchaikovsky. He remarked “I think, dear friend, it is one of my best works. The subject is so poetical.”
