Marmion Academy adding four alumni to Athletic Hall of Fame

Marmion Academy will induct four new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime of the Marmion Cadets vs. DePaul Prep Rams varsity basketball game on Friday, January 6, 2017. The game will begin at 7pm in Marmion's Alumni Hall Gymnasium located at 1000 Butterfield Road in Aurora. All are welcome to attend.

This year's inductees are  Jim Reiland, Andrew Schnell, Gerardo Alvarez and Larry English.

Reiland, a 1957 Marmion graduate, was a four-year member of the baseball team. Reiland is best known for his 50 year coaching career in Aurora, 28 of those years spent at Marmion Academy.  In the summertime he coached Aurora American Legion baseball.

Schnell, class of 2000, was a four-year varsity swimmer, captain of the 2000 State Championship team and member of the 1998 and 1999 State Runner Up teams.  Schnell collected seven State titles in individual or relay events during his high school career. He was an Olympic trials qualifier, Junior National Champion in the 100 Back and went on to swim at Stanford University.

Alvarez, a 2003 graduate, was a three-year varsity soccer athlete and remains Marmion's all-time career leading scorer with 90 goals and 48 assists. He went on to play at Northwestern University where he was a four-year starter and graduated as their all-time leading scorer.

English, class of 2004, was a Marmion three sport varsity athlete (football, basketball and track).  English had a great football career at Northern Illinois University and was picked 16th overall in the 2009 NFL Draft. He played for the San Diego Chargers from 2009-2014.  He then signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014.
