St. Charles North senior Catharine Steiner has been selected as the 2015 Lincolnland District Exchange Club ACE award winner. She will accept her award and scholarship at the regional convention in Quincy on June 28. Cathy is now in the running for the National ACE Awards, and a $10,000 scholarship.
The ACE (Accepting the Challenge of Excellence) Awards is a national youth recognition program of the National Exchange Club. Miss Steiner was nominated by the Tri-Cities Exchange Club. There are over 650 clubs nationally.
The A.C.E. Scholarship nominees are selected based on dramatic changes in their attitudes and performances throughout high school, often overcoming educational, social, physical and personal obstacles.
Catharine successfully completed her high school education despite a lifetime of coping with a rare debilitating genetic disorder, Recessive Dystrophic EpidermolysisBullosa (R-DEB). “I was born with R-DEB, a rare genetic condition that causes blistering of the skin due to friction or trauma. The wounds heal but leave scar tissue that leads to many issues. First the condition is painful and I have wounds covered with bandages on most areas of my body. The problems are too numerous to mention, but include: chronic wounds, anemia, stunted growth, limited dexterity. I start wound care bandage changes at 5:30am on school days and take the handicap bus to school.” At age nine she also suffered a stroke that left her dominate arm paralyzed.Cathy graduated with a B+ average and will be pursuing a degree in Computer and Information Services.
