Join the Batavia Summer Reading Club: "Read to the Rhythm"

May 19, 2015 10:57AM ● Published by Katelyn Nelson

Books are instrumental—for education and leisure. Books also are instrumental in a summer reading club. Blend books with jazzy programs and activities that rock, and you’ve got a summer reading club that can’t be beat!

“Read to the Rhythm,” Summer Reading Club 2015 begins June 6 and runs through August 3.

Summer Reading Club (SRC) for children is an eight-week independent reading incentive program. Participants earn small rewards as they reach the goals on their individual reading logs. Students read books and preschoolers listen to stories.

“Studies show that students who read recreationally perform better,” explained Joanne Zillman, Youth Services manager, “and students read more when they can choose books based on their own interests.”

“As they attend fun, educational programs, young students learn that the Library is a great place to visit, learn, and pursue their many interests,” added Zillman.

Babies can participate in SRC, as well. “We have a special reading log for parents and their babies,” explained Kathleen Redmond, Youth Services librarian. “The log includes activities for parents to share with their babies—activities that foster early literacy.”

This summer, many SRC activities and programs are related to rhythm—“Rock to the Rhythm,” “How Loud Is a Piece of Paper?” “Splat the Cat,” and “What’s that Sound Bingo?” Participants also can enjoy contests and special events, including a sock hop and a rollicking fun program for the whole family, “The Spoon Man.”

The fun begins on Sat., June 6, when the SRC Kickoff takes place from 1 to 2:30pm in the Reading Garden (weather permitting). Children and their parents can enjoy a scoop of ice cream and participate in a sing-along of songs from the “Patrons’ Choice” movies. Children can bring their reading logs back to the Library to begin collecting rewards on this day.

Parents of babies, preschoolers, and students can register for SRC in the Youth Services department beginning May 27.

SRC is not just for kids. High school students and adults can rock their summer by reading or listening to books and turning in a reading log to the Reference Desk. Students and adults will earn a small reward for turning in a log and be entered into a drawing for additional prizes—gift cards from area merchants and restaurants—at the conclusion of SRC.

High school students and adults can pick up a reading log at the Reference Desk beginning May 27 and can begin returning reading logs beginning June 6.

So, Batavia readers—shake, rattle, and roll your way to the Library to join “Read to the Rhythm,” Summer Reading Club 2015.
